Indonesia has a long history of corruption eradication efforts. Indonesia has also pursued many anti corruption reform by forming special government agency to eradicate corruption. Before the KPK, six agencies dating back to the 1950s had been formed to combat corruption. But the successes of these previous institutions had been short-lived.
History had shown that corruption eradication remains ineffective. The public has strongly criticized the Indonesian National Police and Attorney General for not being able to carry out their duties to combat corruption effectively (considerans and general explanation of Law No.30 year 2002).
Therefore, the Indonesian government established KPK in December 2003 by Law No.30 year 2002 on the Corruption Eradication Commission. KPK is an independent state institution that discharges its duties and authorities from interference by any other powers.
