Law Enforcement on Corruption Cases during Covid-19 Pandemic in 2021
The ACU, with responses to corruption cases, has made the work processes flexible in various circumstances upon the revolution of the Covid-19 pandemic through changing a working mode on complaint analysis to an electronic mode. Nevertheless, there have been serious challenges occurring as well on the work of investigation, interrogation, and information gathering since these work require direct and face-to-face interaction. In 2021, the ACU has succeeded tackling down numbers of cases where the outstanding ones are as follows:
1. A case involving over 1000-heactare-floating-forest land located in 3 areas surrounding Tonle Sap Lake in 6 provinces with the allegations of 1. destruction and fraud 2. land clearance and cordon of floating forest land 3. Failure to submit a declaration of assets and liabilities and 4. Money laundering
2. A case involving a director and a deputy chief of administrative and personnel bureau, Department of Health, Kratie Province, demanding and accepting money amounting to USD 740.000 from 129 contestants who are qualified for being selected to become a permanent Health Official in Kratie Province (submitted to the court on August 18, 2021).
3. A case involving a Deputy Chief of Case Filing and Justice Bureau of Counter Counterfeit Committee which the counterfeited products bring about high risks for health and social security, and their allies for having demanded money from some local crafts. (submitted to the court on November 19, 2021).
4. A case involving the misuse of the names of ACU higher management leaders to extort money from some officials and leaders in Kratie Province (submitted to the court on August 12, 2021).
5. A case involving a primary school principal faking a name as an assistant to the President of the ACU to extort money from the vice-principal and many fellow teachers from USD500 to 1000 (submitted to Phnom Penh Municipal Court on August 12, 2021).
